Brown Sugar Bourbon BBQ Baked Beans - featured image

A quick and easy 30-minute side dish featuring canned beans, brown sugar, and bourbon for a deep, smoky, and sweet flavor profile that is perfect for barbecues and potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) navy beans or pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 pound smoked sausage (Andouille or kielbasa), sliced into half-moons
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 12 teaspoons hot sauce (to taste)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup cooked and crumbled bacon bits (optional topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. If using sausage, slice into half-moons. If using bacon, cook until crispy, drain grease (save 1 tbsp if desired).
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, bourbon, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and hot sauce until sugar is mostly dissolved.
  4. Add drained beans, sliced sausage, and half of the cooked bacon to the sauce. Stir gently to coat everything evenly.
  5. Transfer mixture to a 9×13 inch baking dish and spread evenly. Top with remaining bacon bits if using.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes until edges bubble and sauce thickens.
  7. Optional: Broil on high for 2-3 minutes to caramelize the top, watching closely to prevent burning.
  8. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving to allow sauce to set.

Notes

Always rinse canned beans to remove excess starch and sodium. Do not skip the smoked paprika for authentic BBQ flavor. Sugar burns easily, so watch closely if broiling. Taste the sauce before baking to adjust sweetness or heat levels. Can be made up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerated.
