Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (100g) dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (60g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp fresh orange zest
  • 2 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 cup (90g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup (113g) butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 23 cups (240-360g) powdered sugar, sifted (for frosting)
  • 23 tbsp fresh orange juice (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp orange zest (for frosting)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/8 tsp salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Sift in cocoa powder and whisk until combined. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar vigorously for 2 minutes until glossy. Add eggs one at a time, whisking well after each. Stir in vanilla, orange zest, and orange juice.
  4. Gradually fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients using a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix. Fold in chocolate chips.
  5. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  6. While brownies cool, beat softened butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar one cup at a time, alternating with orange juice. Beat on medium-high for 3-4 minutes until fluffy. Stir in zest and salt.
  7. Spread orange frosting over cooled brownies. Cut into squares and serve.

Notes

Ensure eggs are at room temperature to prevent butter from seizing. Use only the orange part of the peel for zest, avoiding the bitter white pith. Do not overmix the batter to maintain a fudgy texture. Cool brownies completely before frosting to prevent melting. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. For dairy-free, use vegan butter and dairy-free chocolate chips.
